Bug bombs, also known as foggers, are largely ineffective against bed bugs. Ohio State University's Department of Entomology tested the effectiveness of major bug bomb brands, and found that the bombs had little to no effect on all strands of bed bugs they tested on.

There are two reasons why bug bombs won't work on a bed bug infestation. First, they usually use synthetic pyrethroids as their active ingredient. Most modern strains of bed bugs have grown resistant to pyrethroids. Second, bug bombs and foggers fill open spaces with insecticide, but aren't good for penetrating deep into walls and furniture. Since bed bugs are very good hiders, they may be hiding beyond the reach of the chemicals.
