Landlord Demands Tenants Throw Away Their Furniture Because Of Bed Bugs
WMDT News recently broadcast a news segment about a letter sent by the landlord of a bed bug infested apartment complex to the tenants demanding that they throw away all their furniture and mattresses.
RUITLAND, Md. – Throw out all your furniture or else face a fine or be evicted.
That’s what residents at the Fruitland Apartments say they were told – and they have the letter to prove it.
I’ve heard some odd bed bug stories, but this one tops the list. Evidently the landlord is arranging a treatment for the infested building and believes that everyone should start from scratch to make the treatments more effective. Treatment would of course be easier without any furniture, but how can you expect people to throw away all their belongings.
The story gets better:
The landlord gave all the residents a letter stating that their building was contaminated with bed bugs and that if they didn’t get rid of their furniture they would face fines of 110 to 300 dollars.
The residents of this building may want to consult collectively with an attorney as if the letter is genuine, they would have a strong case against the landlord. The letter may turn out to be a hoax so I’ll keep everyone posted if the story develops further.
