Bed bug monitors and traps are essential tools in a bed bug treatment process. They can detect bed bug activity, monitor the population over time, and can even stop bed bugs from reaching you in your bed. Most monitors are designed for low cost, single use, and easy disposal, which can add up in cost over time. Recently, Jeff White (from BedBug Central) has introduced a new, more modern take on the bed bug monitor, with SenSci’s easy-to-use, discrete, and reusable Volcano.
SenSci Volcano Bed Bug Detector
SenSci Volcano is a new monitoring device that serves as a cost effective solution for detecting and capturing bed bugs. As a passive bed bug monitor, Volcano works by capturing bed bugs climbing over the device during the host seeking process, using the person sleeping in the room as the main attractant. The monitor can be used for early detection of bed bugs in a low-level situation, or to monitor a population, by simply placing Volcano along common paths bed bugs use to reach their host. Volcano’s sturdy design is built to handle the toughest of bed bug infestations and, unlike single-use devices, can be reused for endless monitoring cycles.
Standing at 3x3x1 inches, Volcano’s low-profile size allows for use in almost any environment. It’s volcano-like design even prevents dust from building up on the walls found inside the trap, reducing the chance of bed bugs escaping.
- The monitor’s exterior features 4 slanted and textured walls that allow bed bugs to climb up effortlessly once they encounter the monitor.
- On the inside however, you’ll notice Volcano features a set of smooth, flat-faced walls designed to prevent bed bugs from escaping.
- Underneath you will find the detachable, clear, concave window for easy inspection, and lure installation.
Volcano consists of only 2 pieces, making it easy to assemble. The only thing you need to check is the orientation of the monitor’s inspection window. Once installed, you should also be able to read “Made In USA” from left to right.
Ideal places to use SenSci Volcano:
- Along baseboards
- Carpet edges
- By the legs of beds/furniture
- In the corners of a room
To inspect SenSci Volcano for bed bugs, simply pick up the monitor and tilt it enough to look through the clear window found underneath. Give special attention to the walls and corners of the monitor as these are common gathering spots for bed bugs.
If you find bed bugs in your trap, flip the monitor upside down over a sink or bathtub and tap it repetitively to ensure all it’s contents fall out. Inspect Volcano thoroughly before placing it back down for another cycle of monitoring.
If you don’t find bed bugs in your trap, you can place the monitor back down and check on it periodically.
Although SenSci Volcano works as a passive monitor, it can also be converted into an active monitor by equipping it with a synthetic attractant or lure like SenSci Activ Bed Bug Lure. Sensci Activ attracts bed bugs by simulating human sweat, which causes bed bugs to be actively drawn into the volcano where they can be collected and monitored.
To use SenSci Activ with SenSci Volcano, Simply open a SenSci Activ Lure (following the directions found on the label) and place the opened packet on the center of Volcano’s inspection window.
With the Activ lure in place, you can go ahead and snap the window back onto Volcano and make sure that the Activ packet is not pinched between the window and the top of Volcano.
Now you have successfully built an “ActivVolcano”, and can place the discrete monitor along baseboards, and the legs of your bed, to catch bed bugs before they can get to you.
Volcano stands as a versatile passive bed bug monitor that can be reused for endless monitoring cycles to control dense bed bug populations, or to detect for early bed bug activity . This alone, can save families and business owners hundreds of dollars in replacing single-use lures. You even have the option of increasing the monitors effectiveness by converting it into an active bed bug monitor, by installing a SenSci Activ bed bug lure. You can include SenSci Volcano in our 4-step solution for getting rid of bed bugs, or use it by itself, to monitor for activity along any paths you believe bed bugs are using to reach you.
